This week on Gin & Justice, Justine and Amanda interview a complete SUPERSTAR in her field. Kristin Henning, a Youth Advocate, Juvenile Defender, Law Professor at Georgetown, and Author of newly released book, Rage of Innocence: How America Criminalizes Black Youth, talks to the girls about the criminalization of Black youth. She bases this on empirical and qualitative data and in her book, she weaves this data into the stories of her clients who face generation and situational trauma due to policing in Black communities. Kristin shares how the very trauma responses that Black youth experience and exert during police encounters, are the very "signs" of suspicion police tend to zero in on and how this has impacted Black youth across America for centuries. Kristin also shares her suggestions of hope and her optimism that if we can share these stories, people would not be okay with the way Black and Brown children are treated for simply being children. As Kristin states, "We need to radically reduce the footprints of police in the lives of our children."
